Social Events

At our monthly dinner meetings members, their partners and friends join together to enjoy a meal, great company, lots of laughs and interesting guest speakers.  Social activities, such as a coffee catch up or breakfast and some kayaking at the very beautiful Baroon Pocket Dam are regularly organised by David.

Lions Christmas Cakes and puddings

Each year our Club sells the very yummy and popular Lions cakes and puddings to raise funds for our Club.  We take some of the larger cakes, cut each of them into four and spend two or three days having lots of laughs icing and decorating the cakes which are then packaged and sold to the public.  Funds raised go to                       Beyond Blue.

Peace Poster Competition

Lions International holds a Peace Poster Competition each year to enable students of local schools to enter drawings and paintings that depict the theme chosen by Lions International for that year.  Club members talk to the students who enter and then when the entries are judged, each child has the opportunity to explain the meaning of their poster.  Our Club donates book vouchers as prizes.

Supporting our Community

Our club supports many people and organisations in the Community.  Some of the ways in which we do this are by donating funds, raising funds for them, providing food vouchers, assisting with payment of utilities to keep the organisation viable, assisting with lining the ceiling of a well used community hall, providing bags of goodies for Domestic Violence organisations, assisting with the formation of a Grief Garden for the Community, selling poppies and other items to fund raise for the RSL on Anzac Day, assisting the local Arts abnd Crafts group with moving furniture and display tables to and from the venue , manning the entrance gate on the Saturday of the Show for the Maleny Show Society, providing bags of toiletries for the local hospital to distribute to patients who need them, assisitng the community in financing the running of the Christmas street carnival

Looking After Our Environment

David maintains the Fryer's Creek area which is located on the entrance road to Maleny.  He has planted trees, pruned them and regularly mows the area to make it a much more attractive section of land.  Members regularly assist other Service Clubs with the maintenance of the area called Settler's Green on the Maleny Precinct.  Clean Up Australia Day has seen our members assist on many occasions with collecting rubbish in and around Maleny.

Recycle for Sight

Our Club takes part in the Lions Recycle for Sight Project.  We have a network of optometrists and pharmacies in our town whereby community members can deposit old or unwanted spectacles.  These are collected by a member, parcelled up and sent off to a collection point from where they are distributed to countries where there are people in need.

Supporting Youth

There are many ways in which our Club supports Youth.  Each year we take part in the Lions Youth of the Year.  Students in years 11 and 12 from the high school take part in an interview and are also judged on a prepared speech and two informal speeches.  Youth of the Year is held in February each year with winners going on to take part in Zone and District competitions.  Our Club also supports local schools with financial assistance to provide for families in need to assist in making education available for all regardless of the economic situation of the family.

Meet and Greet

For a number of years our club has looked forward to welcoming new members to our Maleny Community.  Originally a dinner was held where we invited new families to the district to attend to meet other members of the Community.  In the past couple of years cuircumstances changed and this became an afternoon tea.  Local businesses assist by sponsoring the event and take part by having displays of their businesses at the event.  Afternoon tea is sourced from a local restaurant, a raffle and aution are held and entertainment from local artists is provided.  This has proved to not only be a great way to meet new members of the Community but also a very good fund raiser for our Club.

Assisting with Cancer Research

Our Club supports Cancer Research by donating to the Lions Cord Blood Appeal, The Australian Lions children Cancer Research Fund and by supporting Camp Quality, a camp run for children fighting cancer.

Fighting Diabetes

With diabetes being one of the fastest growing problems for the health of our population, our club has taken part in the Lap the Map activities, made to donations to Lions to assist in research into Diabetes and we have sponsored a child suffering from Diabetes to enable them to attend Camp Cockatoo.
